Authorities issue wind and avalanche weather alerts in Nordland and Troms January 10-11; transportation disruptions reported

Warning

Event

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued avalanche and gale wind warnings in the counties of Nordland and Troms for Thursday, January 10, and Friday, January 11. Wind gusts of up to 130 kph (81 mph) were recorded at the Tjeldsund Bridge (Troms county) while airports in Nordland have reported significant delays and authorities warn temporary airport closures are possible through January 11. At least six students were injured when high winds caused a school bus to roll-over in Valnesfjord (Nordland) and parts of the E6 highway near Saltfjellet (Nordland) were closed due to accidents. A cold front and lower temperatures are expected in northern counties from the nighttime hours (local time) on Friday. Consequent transportation disruptions are possible in the affected area in the coming days.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports and updates from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, confirm travel reservations, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation or shelter-in-place orders).
