Mongolia: Extreme cold weather warning in the North and West Jan. 13

As of Monday, January 14, according to local weather authorities, heavy snowfall and extreme cold weather are expected to affect the northern and western parts of the country in the next few days. Overnight temperatures are likely to reach -40; -45 °C (-49 °F). Strong winds and snow storms could also affect the eastern and central regions.

Context

Mongolia's climate is strongly continental, with long, frigid winters, and short, warm summers. The average temperature in January is around -32 °C (-26 °F) in the coldest areas of the north, and around -15 °C (5 °F) in the south. The northern part of Mongolia lies in the permafrost area (the ground below a certain depth remains frozen throughout the year).
