Informational

Event

Surabaya (East Java province) city authorities partially reopened Jalan Raya Gubeng on Thursday, December 27. Two out of four lanes of traffic are now open to public use after workers filled and repaved the collapsed road. Continued traffic congestion is likely on Jalan Raya Gubeng and other routes in downtown Surabaya in the coming days and weeks.

Context

On December 18, a large sinkhole caused the collapse of Jalan Raya Gubeng. The sinkhole is suspected to have been caused by poor planning and construction in the excavating of a basement. All four lanes were closed until December 27. Surabaya is Indonesia's second-largest city with a population of 3 million people and a total of 10 million in the greater metropolitan area.

Advice

Individuals in Surabaya are advised to monitor updates to the situation and anticipate traffic delays and congestion in the area for the coming days and weeks.
