According to Indian health authorities, nearly 1700 cases of swine flu, including 49 associated deaths, have been reported in the country over the first two weeks of January 2019. Among the states most severely affected by the ongoing outbreak is Rajasthan, where 200 cases have already been reported in the past year, including 31 since January 1. Other states affected by the outbreak include Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, as well as the National Capital Territory (Delhi).
Context
Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, the obese, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. A seasonal vaccine is available.
Advice
Individuals are advised to take preventive measures to minimize the risk of contracting or spreading the disease, including frequent handwashing and/or use of antibacterial gel, sneezing and coughing into one's elbow, avoiding contact with individuals presenting flu-like symptoms (as well as avoiding contact with others when ill), and seeking medical attention in the event of a fever over 38°C (100°F), severe coughing, and sore throat or difficulty breathing.
