Police forces dispersed with tear gas hundreds of students and teachers protesting in front of the Parliament building in Athens on Monday, January 14. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are likely near the protest site. Further clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

Teachers and students are protesting government-proposed educational reforms and are demanding that the Ministry of Education withdraw the bill from Parliament. On January 11, demonstrators in Athens rallied at the Propylaea to protest government supported education reforms. Demonstrators attempted to march to the Maximos Mansion but were intercepted by police. At least one protester was reportedly injured after police officers fired tear gas and flash grenades to disperse the crowd.

Advice

Individuals in Athens are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate localized transportation disruptions, and avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
