Burkina Faso: Demonstrations planned in Ouagadougou and Dori Jan. 12

The civil society group “Truth and Justice” is calling for demonstrations in Ouagadougou and Dori on Saturday, January 12. In a statement released on Tuesday, January 8, group leaders called on all people to participate in the marches to demand an investigation into recent intercommunal violence in Barsalogho. The group is also calling for the government to take strong measures to prevent further deadly reprisals against ethnic communities. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around the protest sites. Further associated demonstrations are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Context

At least 46 civilians were killed during a militant attack targeting members of the Mossi ethnic community in Yirgou village in Barsalogho district (Centre-Nord region) on December 31. Authorities revised an earlier statement indicating six villagers were killed in the initial attack which reportedly aimed to stoke ethnic conflict between the villagers and Fulani herders.
