Warning

Event

Thousands of people are expected to participate in anti-government protests in Belgrade on Saturday, December 29, to call for the resignation of President Aleksandar Vucic and to denounce government corruption. Demonstrations have taken place on three-consecutive Saturdays initially triggered by the November 23 assault of opposition party leader Borko Stefanovic. Protesters are expected to gather at Students Square, although the details of the demonstration route are unclear as of Wednesday, December 26. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions can be expected.

Context

Three men reportedly attacked Serbian Left politician Borko Stefanovic on November 23 following a public debate in Krusevac. Serbian Left officials contend the attack was perpetrated by government forces or supporters. Demonstrations, first launched on December 8, are demanding the resignation of President Vucic, balanced reporting by public broadcasters, and transparency in investigations of attacks against opposition politicians and journalists. On December 24, the prosecutor's office released the three men arrested in connection with the attack without charges.

Advice

Individuals in Serbia, particularly those in Belgrade, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
