Peru: State of emergency extended in southern Peru

Government extends state of emergency in southern Peru until late January; heightened security presence expected

The national government extended a state of emergency in southern Peru along the Apurimac-Cusco-Arequipo corridor, effective for 30 days from Saturday, December 29. Rights of freedom of assembly and home privacy are suspended along the national highway PE-3SY and for 500 m (547 yards) alongside the road from Muyo Orcco to Tiendayoq (Chumbivilcas province). The National Police will patrol the area with support from the military. A heightened security presence and measures are possible and associated transportation disruptions, including checkpoints, cannot be ruled out.
