Vietnam: Disruptions, flood warnings until Nov. 28 following Typhoon Usagi /update 4

Event

Adverse weather and flooding are expected to continue to affect central Vietnam until at least Wednesday, November 28, following the passage of Typhoon Usagi. Flight delays have been reported at Ho Chi Minh City International Airport (SGN) as of November 26 and flood warnings remain in effect in the central coastal provinces, from Quang Tri to Khanh Hoa.

Typhoon Usagi (a.k.a. Samuel) made landfall near the city of Vung Tau (Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) on the morning (local time) of November 25, before weakening into a tropical depression and moving west-northwest. One person was killed.

Usagi is forecast to move over southern Cambodia on the evening of November 26.

Context

Tropical cyclones and typhoons are common in the South China Sea from June through November. Central Vietnam was also hit by Tropical Depression Toraji on November 18, which left 14 people dead and caused severe damage.

Advice

Individuals present in central Vietnam are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, reconfirm flights, obey instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
