Warning

Event

Soldiers shot and killed one person during a protest over flooding and poor road conditions in the Nkpolu area of Port Harcourt (Rivers state) on Monday, November 5. In total, related violence has left at least three protesters dead, as well as a police officer in recent days. The unrest was reportedly spreading to the Rumuokoro area as of Monday afternoon (local time). Similar protests over poor road conditions and flood-related transportation disruptions are possible in Port Harcourt over the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in the Port Harcourt area are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, prepare for transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
