Nigeria: Security forces foil suicide attack in Maiduguri November 13

On Tuesday, November 13, Nigerian military officials announced that security forces foiled a suicide attack in Maiduguri (Borno state). According to local sources, the Nigerian Army arrested a female suicide bomber in Gonikalachari who was reportedly planning to detonate an explosive vest in Maiduguri. Additional attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram, as well as further anti-terror operations by Nigerian security forces, are possible in Borno state in the near term.

Context

The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA). Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.
