Nigeria: Cholera outbreak in Yobe, Adamawa, and Borno states /update 4

Event

The number of cholera cases reported in Yobe, Adamawa, and Borno states continues to rise amid an ongoing outbreak as of early November. At least 10,000 cases, including 175 related deaths, predominately in crowed internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps. Further cases are possible in the near term as adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene services are lacking in these areas.

Context

Cholera is typically spread via infected water supplies. It induces acute diarrhea leading to severe dehydration, frequently resulting in death. The risk of death is highest among people with compromised immune systems, such as malnourished children or those living with HIV. However, even among healthy adults, cholera can be fatal within a matter of hours.

Advice

To reduce the risk of contracting cholera, wash hands regularly, drink only bottled or purified water, and avoid eating raw or undercooked foods. Individuals who believe they may have contracted cholera should seek immediate medical attention.
