Myanmar: Thousands flee violence in northern Shan state /update 1

Event

Increased fighting has forced thousands of people to flee their homes in northern Shan state as of Friday, November 2, according to relief and local charity organizations. Approximately 2000 villagers have arrived at internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Lashio (Lashio district), fleeing violence between the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army South (RCSS/SSAS) and forces from the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Shan State Progressive Party/Shan State Army North (SSPP/SSAN) that began on October 24. Continued fighting and displacement is expected in the near-term.

Context

Myanmar has experienced ongoing rebellions and violent internal conflict, often due to ethnic tensions, involving numerous non-state armed groups. Shan state had more than 8400 IDPs as of September 30. The conflict between the armed groups in Shan involves territorial disputes and political rivalry; the RCSS is a signatory of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement, while the TNLA and SSPP are yet to join the government-sponsored peace initiative.

Authorities advise foreign nationals against all nonessential travel to northern Shan state with the exception of Kyaukme and Hsipaw towns.
