Mozambique: Attacks in Cabo Delgado November 23-24

Militants kill at least 12 in the village of Chicuaia Velha (Cabo Delgado province) November 23; separate attack against military base in Cabo Delgado November 24

Unidentified militants attacked the village of Chicuaia Valha (Cabo Delgado province) on Friday, November 23, setting fire to houses and attacking local residents using machetes. At least 12 people were killed and hundreds others fled across the nearby border into Tanzania. The assailants may have been members of the Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Shabaab) group. 

Furthermore, militants reportedly attacked a Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) base in the Mocimboa da Praia district of the province on the evening of November 24. At least three FADM members were killed and several more injured. Details are still emerging.

Similar attacks are possible in Cabo Delgado province in the near-term.

Context

The Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Shabaab) group has been blamed for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province.
