Nigeria: Nationwide protests October 30; threat to resume strike /update 3

Event

Several labor unions have called for nationwide protests to take place on Tuesday, October 30, to denounce the government's failure to implement a new national minimum wage within the agreed timeframe. According to local sources, the protests have started in Lagos, along Ikorodu Road, as of 10:00 (local time); similar protests are likely around the State House in Lagos and around the government houses in Abuja. A heightened security presence as well as associated transportation disruptions are likely in major urban centers.

Furthermore, unions have threatened to resume an indefinite strike from November 6. Businesses, schools, and transportation services could all be affected should the strike be held.

Context

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union of Nigeria, and the United Labour Congress launched a nationwide strike from September 27 through September 30, to demand a minimum wage increase from Naira 18,000 (USD 50) to Naira 50,000 (USD 135). Workers from private and public sectors participated in the strike leading to significant service disruptions, including to flight operations.
