Nigeria: Militants attack base in Borno state Oct. 27 /update 1

Event

Nigerian military officials announced on Sunday, October 28, that suspected Boko Haram fighters assaulted a military base in Gashigar (Borno state) during the previous night. The militants attacked the base from two directions using a number of trucks mounted with heavy machine guns. According to the Nigerian military, the attackers were successfully repelled by the soldiers who were supported by helicopter gunships. At least one soldier was killed and four others were wounded during the fighting. Similar Boko Haram attacks are possible in Borno state in the near-term.

Context

The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA). Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks by Islamist militants have been on the rise since June 2017.
