Nigeria: Cholera outbreak continues in Yobe state /update 2

According to Nigerian health officials, an outbreak of cholera has infected at least 1319 people in Yobe state as of October 1. At least 61 fatalities have been confirmed. The most affected areas include Gulani (with 31 percent of reported cases), Gujba (27.8 percent of reported cases), and Damaturu (24 percent of reported cases).

Context

Cholera is typically spread via infected water supplies. It induces acute diarrhea leading to severe dehydration, frequently resulting in death. The risk of death is highest among people with compromised immune systems, such as malnourished children or those living with HIV. However, even among healthy adults, cholera can be fatal within a matter of hours.
