Libya: Mitiga Airport ceases all nighttime service effective Oct. 8

Libya's Civil Aviation Authority announced the indefinite suspension of all nighttime service in and out of Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport (MJI) effective Monday, October 8, due to ongoing security concerns. The closure will be in effect for six hours per day, from 01:00 (local time) to 07:00. Airlines have been advised to alter flight schedules as necessary to comply with this new order.

Context

Mitiga Airport has experienced repeated closures in past weeks amid recurring bouts of fighting and rocket fire in the area, despite several recent ceasefires. Libya has been divided into rival governments and factions with their own militias and political parties since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. In general, the security situation in Libya remains precarious and there is little to no sign of a return to relative stability in the near-term.
