Colombia: Nationwide student strike and protests on October 12

Nationwide student strike and protests on October 12; avoid all protests

Warning

Event

Following failed negotiations with the government on Thursday, October 11, university students and faculty have called for nationwide and protests to be held on Friday, October 12. All 32 public universities in the country are expected to remain closed until further notice; private universities could also potentially be affected. Street protests and associated traffic disruptions are to be anticipated in cities throughout Colombia, notably the capital Bogotá. Low-level violence (clashes, vandalism) cannot be ruled out.

Context

The Colombian government promised to reassign USD 164 million to the education budget, less than 12 percent of the total requested by student unions. A nationwide strike was carried out on October 10, while demonstrations by students were reported in Cartagena on October 4. While recent marches have been peaceful, past student demonstrations have led to violent clashes with police.

Advice

Individuals in Colombia are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution and allow for additional time to reach their destinations.
