Argentina: Buenos Aires to host G20 Summit Nov. 29-Dec. 1 /update 1

Event

The G20 Leaders Summit will be held in Buenos Aires from November 30 through December 1. Heightened security measures will be implemented throughout the city during the event, including the deployment of an additional 25,000 personnel. During the summit, the Aeroparque Palomar (EPA), San Fernando (FDO), and Morón (MXV) airports will be closed to facilitate the arrival and departures of visiting dignitaries. Additional security measures and disruptions are also likely at Ezeiza International Airport (EZE). The summit will be held at Costa Salguero, which will be surrounded by three separate security rings. Street closures near the summit and throughout downtown Buenos Aires are expected to be announced in the coming days. Anti-G20 and other associated demonstrations will likely be held in the city during the summit as well.

Context

The G20 is made up of the world’s 20 largest economies, i.e. the US, Germany, UK, Turkey, South Africa, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Japan, Mexico, Italy, India, Indonesia, France, China, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and Argentina, and the EU.

Anti-IMF groups held multiple protests in July to oppose the USD 50 billion loan that Argentina received from the IMF, as well as the economic policies of President Mauricio Macri's conservative government. A related nationwide general strike was carried out on June 25, causing significant transportation disruptions throughout Buenos Aires.
