Venezuela: Pro-government march in Caracas August 6 /update 3

Pro-government march in Caracas August 6 to denounce alleged August 4 assassination attempt on President Maduro

Warning

Event

Government supporters plan to hold a march in Caracas on Monday, August 6, to denounce the alleged assassination attempt against President Nicolás Maduro. Demonstrators will gather at Plaza Morelos beginning at 10:00 (local time) before marching to the Miraflores Palace (presidential palace). An increased security presence is likely along the march route.

Context

The alleged attack took place on August 4. According to the government, two drones were involved, one of which supposedly dropped explosives onto a building near Maduro as he was giving a public address. Maduro has blamed neighboring Colombia for the blast, which Bogotá has denied. Local firefighters have reportedly blamed the explosions on a gas leak, while the opposition has accused the Maduro administration of staging the incident, which left seven people injured, to justify a further crackdown on civil society.

Advice

Individuals in Caracas, and Venezuela more generally, are advised to strictly avoid all protests due to the risk of violence amid high sociopolitical tensions.
