Philippines: Typhoon Yagi causes flooding in Metro Manila August 11

Event

Typhoon Yagi caused significant flash flooding in and around Metro Manila on Saturday, August 11, as it moved through the region. Over 54,000 people were evacuated from their homes, including in Marikina City, Quezon City, Valenzuela, and parts of Rizal province. At least three people have been killed by the flooding as of Sunday, August 12. Train service was disrupted through Monday, August 13, and some roads were impassable due to high water levels. Monsoon rains are expected to hit Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon on Monday and may cause additional flooding. Associated transportation disruptions and power outages are also possible.

Context

Typhoons and tropical storms regularly strike the Philippines during the monsoon season - which typically spans from November to April in the northeast, and from May to October in the southwest.

Individuals in Metro Manila, and Luzon more generally, are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders), follow local weather forecasts, and verify travel plans prior to setting out. In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
