China: Storms to hit north, northwest, and northeast August 6-7

Rain and thunderstorms forecast for several northern regions August 6-7; ongoing heatwave expected to end

Warning

Event

Rain and thunderstorms are forecast for some northern, northwestern, and northeastern provinces August 6-7. The rain will follow a week of severe high temperatures. The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the provinces of Jilin and Liaoning will likely be the hardest hit by the rain, which may lead to localized flooding as well as significantly reduced temperatures.

Context

Since the end of July, a severe heatwave (with temperatures up to 39°C [102°F]) impacted the north of continental China (e.g. Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guangdong, and Xinjiang provinces), generating drought conditions in various regions (e.g. Jilin and Liaoning).

Advice

Individuals present in affected regions are advised to take precautions against heatstroke, be on alert for wildfires, avoid unnecessary exhausting outdoor activities, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
