Warning

Event

Torrential rain caused deadly flooding in Xinjiang and Yunnan provinces in recent days. On Friday, August 3, government officials confirmed that at least 20 people were killed throughout the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region since July 31. Another eight residents are missing from Qincheng Township (Hami prefecture). Over 8700 homes and other facilities were damaged by the flooding and over 5500 residents have been displaced. Heavy rains in Yunnan province has also displaced approximately 226,000 people as of August 3. At least six people have also been killed in the flooding.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for continued traffic disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Potentially impacted air travelers are advised to verify the status of their flights prior to departure for the airport and to anticipate potential delays.
