Deadly communal clashes in Soména (Mopti region) on July 26; at least three people killed

Warning

Event

Deadly communal clashes were reported in Mopti region on Wednesday, July 26. According to local sources, armed men attacked the village of Soména in the Cercle de Djenné, killing at least three people and wounded several more. The attack reportedly targeted members of the Fulani community. Further communal clashes are possible in Mopti in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Intermittent clashes have erupted in central Mali since the beginning of 2016 between the Fulani and Bambara communities. The conflict between these two ethnic groups is partially over land use, as the Fulani are largely herders and the Bambara are largely farmers. However, in recent months, Fulani groups have accused Bambara militias of illegally targeting Fulani civilians under the guise of anti-terror operations.

Advice

The security environment in Mali remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.

Due to the underlying terrorist and kidnapping threats prevalent in the country, all those present in Mali are advised to remain discreet regarding personal details, particularly information concerning nationality, employment, family, etc. Individuals are also advised to avoid public events and places frequented by Westerners, to remain vigilant at all times (especially in local markets, now used by terrorists as recruitment grounds), and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
