Liberia: Severe flooding in Moronvia

Event

Heavy downpours in the capital Monrovia and its surroundings have resulted in significant flooding as of Tuesday, July 24. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed and traffic has been disrupted throughout the capital. More rain is forecast for the coming hours and days and, as such, further disruptions and damages are to be expected. Authorities have enacted disaster management measures.

Context

The rainy season in Liberia typically runs from May to October. Since most of the country's cities lack adequate drainage systems, flooding is common during this period, often resulting in extensive infrastructural damage and fatalities.

Advice

Individuals present in Monrovia are advised to limit their travel until conditions improve and to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities, including possible evacuation orders. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock you over. Finally, because floodwater may also contain wastewater or chemical products, wear boots and try to avoid any contact with the water; all items having come into contact with the water should be washed and disinfected and foodstuffs disposed of.
