Liberia: Independence Day celebrations July 26

Independence Day celebrations to be held nationwide on July 26; commercial and government disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Liberia will hold nationwide Independence Day celebrations on Thursday, July 26. The official events will take place in the capital Monrovia. Government offices and businesses will be closed on July 26 to allow all citizens to participate in various festivities. Commercial and traffic disruptions are to be expected throughout the country.

Furthermore, members of the Student Unification Party (SUP) planned to stage a demonstration on July 26 in front of the University of Liberia campus, located in the Capitol Hill area, to denounce the arrests of students during a July 23 protest. Authorities have not authorized the demonstration; as such clashes with police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Liberia, particularly Monrovia, are advised to expect crowded conditions, longer travel times, and increased security measures during the celebrations. Moreover, individuals are advised to avoid all demonstrations as violence may flare up without warning.
