Japan: Typhoon Jongdari to make landfall July 28-29 /update 1

According to forecasts on Saturday, July 28, Typhoon Jongdari will make landfall on Honshu island either late Saturday evening (local time) or early Sunday, July 29. As of 11:00, the storm is approximately 220 km (137 mi) east of Hachijojima island, with winds of up to 126 km/h (78 mph). The Japan Meteorological Agency expects Typhoon Jongadri to slow down after it makes landfall and turn west. Up to 40 cm (16 in) of rain may fall in the Kanto-Koshin and Tokai regions, 25 cm (10 in) in the Kinki region, and 10 cm (4 in) in the Chugoku region. Authorities warn that significant flooding, landslides, and strong winds will impact the areas. Around 150 domestic flights have been canceled as of Saturday morning and further delays and cancelations are possible across Japan.

Context

Typhoons and tropical storms regularly hit these areas from June through November after gathering strength in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea.
