India: Heavy rain and transportation disruptions in Mumbai July 11 /update 2

On Wednesday, July 11, the fifth consecutive day of heavy rain coupled with a high tide resulted in significant flooding in Mumbai, disrupting daily life and transportation. Water levels remain high in low-lying areas including Kalina, Chembur, and Mankhu. Train delays and cancelations were reported, as well as flooded roads.

In the first ten days in July, Mumbai received over 85 cm (33 in) rain, more than the typical amount for the entire month. Heavy rain is forecast to continue until Saturday, July 14.

Context

Over 60 people have lost their lives in Mumbai in rain-related incidents over the past six weeks, since the beginning of the ongoing monsoon season.
