Haiti: Protest in Port-au-Prince July 24

Protest to take place in Port-au-Prince July 24 in front of Palais de Justice; avoid all demonstrations

Warning

Event

Various organizations are set to hold a demonstration in the capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, July 24, to call for the release of individuals detained during rioting that broke out July 6-7, among other demands. The protest will be held in front of the Palais de Justice (courthouse). Furthermore, a related general strike is set to take place on July 30.

All protests in Haiti, even smaller ones, have the potential to disrupt daily life as they often involve roadblocks and/or violence.

Context

Several days of deadly unrest broke out earlier in the month following an announced increase in fuel prices, which have since been canceled.

Advice

Individuals in Haiti are advised to strictly avoid all protests due to the likelihood of violence and to keep abreast of the sociopolitical climate.
