Guinea: Conakry airport workers threaten to strike August 2 /update 8

Unions representing workers at Conakry International Airport (CKY) have threatened to launch an indefinite strike starting on Thursday, August 2. The announcement was made on July 26 by workers associated with the CNTG-USTG trade unions to denounce the rising costs of fuel. According to media reports, CKY operations will be paralyzed if the strike takes place.

Context

Various trade unions launched an indefinite nationwide general strike on July 24 to protest rising fuel costs. Violent protests have been taking place throughout the country since July 2, after the price of regular gasoline increased from CFA 8000 to 10,000 (USD 0.88 to 1.10) per liter. The most significant events have taken place in the capital Conakry; police have forcibly dispersed protesters who erected highly disruptive roadblocks in various areas of the city.
