Finland: Border controls implemented July 13-17 ahead of Trump-Putin summit /update 1

The first summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will be held on Monday, July 16, in Helsinki. In a bid to reduce potential threats, Finnish authorities have ordered the temporary introduction of border controls - including for travelers arriving from within the EU Schengen Area, citizens of which are usually free from internal border controls - from 12:00 (local time) on Friday, July 13, until 12:00 on Tuesday, July 17.

According to Helsinki police, at least ten demonstration have been organized by various organizations and political parties. The largest demonstration, "Helsinki Calling!" will take place on July 15 from 13:00 to 17:00 between Kaisaniemi and Senaatintori. Significantly heightened security measures and transportation disruptions (including road closures) are expected throughout Helsinki in the coming days, and especially around the Presidential Palace where the summit will be held.

Travelers are advised to always travel with proper documentation (passport, visa, etc.), to expect longer wait times at Finnish border controls in the coming days, and to monitor developments to the situation. Individuals in Helsinki during the summit are advised to anticipate heightened security measures and increased traffic congestion (particularly at major travel hubs) and allow for additional travel time.
