On Tuesday, July 10, Typhoon Maria passed north of the island of Taiwan before being downgraded to a Category 2 storm (on a scale of 1 to 5)  and moving towards continental China. Maria reached the eastern Chinese coast on the morning of July 11, making landfall 500 km (310 mi) south of Shanghai. All coastal tourist resorts and shops in Fujian province were closed ahead of the storm’s arrival and boats were ordered back to harbors. Maria was expected to bring heavy rain and powerful winds up to 195 km/h (121 mph). Neighboring Zhejiang province was also expected to be affected.

Context

Every year from June through November, typhoons hit Taiwan, China, Japan, the Philippines, and Vietnam after gathering strength in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean or the South China Sea. They typically weaken after making landfall.
