Warning

Event

On Wednesday, July 11, Typhoon Maria made landfall in Fujian province 500 km (310 mi) south of Shanghai after being downgraded to a Category 2 storm (on a scale of 1 to 5). According to local sources, over 200 trains were canceled ahead of the storm's arrival. In addition, most schools and businesses in Fuzhou closed on Wednesday. Transportation disruptions (by land, sea, and air) are possible in the coming hours and days, especially in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces, as heavy rains are forecast through Thursday, July 12, with potentially dangerous conditions and flooding and/or mudslides possible as far inland as Jiangxi, northern Hunan, and Hubei.

Context

Every year from June through November, typhoons hit Taiwan, China, Japan, the Philippines, and Vietnam after gathering strength in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean or the South China Sea. They typically weaken after making landfall.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of weather forecasts, anticipate local transportation disruptions, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders). Stock up on food, water, and other necessities and ensure electronics are fully charged when possible.
