Cambodia: Heightened security ahead of general elections July 29

Heightened security measures implemented ahead of general elections July 29; 80,000 policemen deployed nationwide

Warning

Event

Heightened security measures have been implemented throughout Cambodia ahead of the country's general elections on Sunday, July 29. According to security officials, 80,000 policemen and security forces have been deployed in cities nationwide to provide security for polling stations and all election-related gatherings. Heightened security measures and associated traffic disruptions are to be anticipated around all electoral related events.

Context

Current Prime Minister Hun Sen of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) is widely expected to win the election, with the main opposition party banned and its leaders encumbered by legal cases that have blocked them from running. A court dissolved the main opposition, the Cambodia National Rescue Party, in 2017 after it was found guilty of plotting to seize power, allegedly with the support of the US. Rights groups allege the case could be an attempt to discredit the opposition and intimidate opponents.

Advice

Individuals in Cambodia, especially in Phnom Penh, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all polling places, demonstrations, and political gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
