An Emirati appeals court sentenced human-rights activist Ahmed Mansoor to ten years in prison on Tuesday, May 29, for expressing opinions perceived as damaging to the reputation of the UAE on social media. He was reportedly found guilty of publishing "rumors and lies about the UAE" and promoting "sectarian feelings and hatred." Mansoor was charged under the UAE's 2012 cybercrime law, which prohibits the publication of "information, news, statements or rumors on a website…with intent to make sarcasm or damage the reputation, prestige or stature of the State."

Mansoor had previously been arrested twice before for allegedly insulting the UAE and its leaders.
