University students in Saint-Louis end their indefinite strike on June 25; additional protests still possible

Warning

Event

The Coordination des étudiants de Saint-Louis (CESL) student union in Saint-Louis ended their indefinite strike on Monday, June 25. According to CESL leaders, they decided to end the strike in order to complete their school year, but their demands have not changed. They are still calling for the Ministers of Higher Education and Interior to be removed from office and for a transparent investigation into the death of a student protester in May. The CESL warned that the strike may resume at any time if the authorities do not progress in the investigation.

Context

A national indefinite strike was launched by students on May 15, following the death of a student killed during clashes with security forces near Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis. The initial demonstration had been organized to demand the payment of scholarships. On May 28, President Macky Sall announced a new aid package that will increase the number and value of stipends available for students. The deal also reduces the cost of meal tickets in public universities.

Advice

Individuals in Senegal are advised to remain vigilant, monitor the situation via local media, and avoid any form of public demonstration or public gathering due to the risk of violence.
