Tropical Storm Carlotta to hit Guerrero and Oaxaca states June 16; heavy rain, flash flooding, and landslides possible

Event

The center of Tropical Storm Carlotta is forecast to make landfall on the coast of Guerrero state early on Saturday, June 16 (local time), bringing heavy rainfall and potentially triggering flash flooding and landslides in higher elevations. A tropical storm warning is in effect from Acapulco (Guerrero state) to Lagunas de Chacahua (Oaxaca state). As of 16:00 (local time) on Friday, June 15, the storm was located approximately 110 km (70 mi) southeast of Acapulco, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h (40 mph), and moving northeastward at 6 km/h (3 mph).

Carlotta is forecast to bring 8-15 cm (3-6 in) of rainfall to the coasts of Guerrero and Oaxaca states, notably including the city of Acapulco, with locally higher amounts of 25 cm (10 in) possible; rainfall amounts of 3-5 cm (1-2 in) is forecast for inland areas in both states, with locally higher amounts of 10 cm (4 in) possible. Flooding, landslides, and transportation disruptions are possible in affected areas in the coming hours.

Context

The Pacific Hurricane Season extends from May 15 to November 30 (and the Atlantic Hurricane Season from June 1 to November 30), with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October.
