Guatemala: Volcán de Fuego eruption closes La Aurora Airport June 3

An eruption at Volcán de Fuego has prompted authorities to close La Aurora International Airport (GUA) - serving Guatemala City - on Sunday, June 3. The airport is expected to remain closed at least until 14:15 (local time) on Monday, June 4. The volcano has reportedly covered nearby villages with ash; ashfall was also recorded in Guatemala City. Flight disruptions, including delays and cancelations, are expected at GUA in the coming hours.

Context

The volcano - situated between the three southern departments of Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez - previously entered an eruptive phrase in January and February 2018. It has been in a state of increased activity since 2015, witnessing around 15 eruptive phases per year.
