Event

A protest carried out in front of the National Assembly (Asamblea Legislativa) building in the capital San Salvador was forcibly dispersed by security forces using tear gas on Thursday, June 14. The demonstration had been organized by students at the University of El Salvador to denounce what they see as plans by the ARENA (Alianza Republicana Nacionalista) political party to privatize the provision of water services. The FMLN party (Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional) has condemned the violence.

Further protests denouncing the privatization plans and/or the police crackdown are possible in the coming hours and days, notably in the capital.
