Health officials report over 4000 cases of Lyme disease in Wisconsin; take necessary precautions against tick bites

Informational

Event

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced in early May 2018 that 4299 cases of Lyme disease were recorded in the state of Wisconsin in 2017, the highest number of cases in the state to date. According to the CDC, Wisconsin is among the top 20 percent of US states in reported cases of tick-borne diseases. Officials have warned residents to take necessary precautions to avoid tick and mosquito bites in the coming months due to the risk of Lyme disease and other diseases.

Context

Lyme disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of the infected blackleg tick. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a skin rash called erythema migrants. The disease can spread to the heart, lungs, and nervous system if left untreated.

Advice

To avoid tick bites, individuals should use insect repellent when outdoors and wear long sleeve shirts and pants when walking in densely wooded areas. Check for ticks after hikes and remove them immediately if discovered.
