UK: Arriva Rail North strikes May 24 and 26

Arriva Rail North workers plan to strike on May 24 and 26; consequent rail transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Workers at Arriva Rail North represented by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) have announced they will strike on Thursday, May 24, and Saturday, May 26. Limited rail transportation service is expected on the strike days. Increased road traffic congestion is also possible if large amounts of commuters are forced to seek alternate means of transportation.

Context

The strike is being held to protest a British government request to begin driver-only train operations on the lines; currently, the lines employ both drivers and conductors (or guards) on each train.

Advice

Potentially impacted travelers are advised to confirm train timetables, allow additional time to reach their destinations, and be prepared for rail disruptions (e.g. be prepared to use alternative modes of transportation).
