Storms and flooding in northern Thailand May 23

Warning

Event

As of Wednesday, May 23, the north of Thailand continues to be hit by thunderstorms and flash floods that began on May 21. Lampang and Loei provinces have been particularly hard hit by flash flooding, while Kalasin province was impacted by strong lightning strikes. Damages to property and infrastructure have been reported throughout the north, with significant damage to the agricultural sector also reported in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Further flooding and damages, as well as associated power outages and transportation disruptions, are possible in the coming days.

Context

According to the Thai meteorological authorities, the week of May 7 marked the transition into the rainy season (monsoon season), during which storms and flooding are common.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm travel reservations, and remain vigilant when driving in hazardous conditions.

In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
