Singapore: Trump cancels summit with North Korea /update 1

Event

US President Donald Trump released a statement on Thursday, May 24, canceling the upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jung-un. According to Trump, he decided to cancel the meeting, originally scheduled to take place in Singapore on June 12, due to “tremendous anger and open hostility” in recent North Korean statements. It is unclear if another summit will be scheduled in the near term.

Context

Relations between the two Koreas and the US seem to have been entering into a period of détente following a historic meeting between Kim and South Korean president at the DMZ in April 2018. 

Singapore was likely chosen because it maintains diplomatic relations with North Korea and has been the site of other high-profile summits.
