Violent student protests broke out throughout Senegal on Tuesday, May 15, following the death of a student during clashes with security forces near Gaston Berger University in Saint Louis. The initial demonstration was organized by students demanding the payment of scholarships. According to local sources, violent demonstrations to protest the death of the student broke out on Tuesday afternoon (local time) in Saint Louis, Dakar, Thiès, and Ziguinchor, injuring at least 20 people. Additional protests are likely in the coming hours and days and further violence between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.
