Nationwide earthquake and tsunami drill to be held on May 31

The National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) will conduct an earthquake and tsunami drill throughout Peru at 10:00 (local time) on Thursday, May 31. The drill is expected to begin with sirens and an announcement over loudspeakers. Directions to designated evacuation zones will be issued by authorities and community volunteers. Numerous sectors are expected to take part, including businesses, government offices, hotels, and educational institutions.

Context

Earthquakes are not uncommon in Peru. On January 14, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake left two dead and 65 others injured, with significant infrastructural damage and disruption in the Arequipa, Ica, and Ayacucho regions.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to not be unduly alarmed by the drill and to follow any instructions issued by local authorities.
