Iraq: Heavy rainfall batters the north of the country May 9

At least four dead following days of intense rainfall across various northern regions of the country as of May 9, including Kurdistan; further rainfall expected

Warning

Event

At least four people were killed following heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across various northern regions of the country between Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 9. The most affected areas are located in the Dohuk Governorate (Kurdistan region), including in the city of Dohuk. At least 50 homes have also been damaged. Associated transport and traffic disruptions due to flooded and blocked roads are expected.

Local authorities also indicated that the risk of further rainfall with local thunderstorms remains high in the next few days, particularly in northern areas of the country, including those already affected.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to follow weather reports and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
