UK: Winter weather alerts March 16-18

Authorities issue weather alerts for snow and ice nationwide March 16-18; transportation disruptions likely

The Met Office forecasts cold weather conditions across the UK from Friday, March 16, through Sunday, March 18. An amber warning (second highest rating) for snow and ice was issued starting Friday until 09:00 (local time) Sunday for parts of London, Midlands, Yorkshire, North West, South East, and East of England. A separate snow alert has been issued for South West England, starting early Sunday and remaining in effect until 18:00 Sunday night. Snowfall may range from 1-15 cm (0.4-6 in) depending on the region.

Highways England has also issued an alert, advising drivers to “be prepared” as some roads are expected to be severely affected by the hazardous weather conditions. Drivers are advised to avoid parts of the M62, A66, A628, the M1 between Rotherham and Garforth, the M606 near Bradford, and the M621 near Leeds from 19:00 Friday to 05:00 Saturday .
