Clashes broke out in Madrid between migrants and police overnight March 15-16 following the death of a Senegalese street vendor. The clashes and rioting began in the Lavapiés district of the capital around 21:00 (local time) and continued until around 01:30. Approximately 30 people were wounded, including ten police officers, although none of the injuries are believed to be serious. Some material damage has been reported and six people were arrested.

Further unrest is possible in the coming hours or days amid high tensions.

Context

The Senegalese street vendor is believed to have died from a heart attack after allegedly being chased by police to Lavapiés from the Sol district.
