Warning

Event

El Sindicato de Maquinistas de Metro de Madrid (SCMM), the union representing metro machinists, have announced a new series of strikes in order to protest the presence of asbestos in Madrid trains and stations. Metro workers are expected to strike on the following days:

  • Friday, March 9, from 09:00 to 13:00 (local time)
  • Tuesday, March 13, from 05:30 to 09:30
  • Thursday, March 15, from 17:00 to 21:45

Metro services are expected to experience some disruptions, including delays and cancelations during the strikes.

In addition to strikes, SCMM members plan to gather outside of the Madrid Assembly on Friday, March 9, to demand action to improve worker safety. SCMM leaders said they are willing to call off the strike and protest if the CEO of Metro de Madrid or the Minister of Transport sign a document certifying that metro workers and customers are not at risk from asbestos that remains in the subway.

Advice

Individuals in Madrid area are advised to monitor developments, to anticipate transportation disruptions, to allow extra time to reach their destinations, and avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution.
